Boycott U.S. Goods? Best Be Careful
Report: In 2024, the U.S. had a goods trade deficit with Canada of $63.3 billion, with U.S. goods exports to Canada at $349.4 billion and imports from Canada at $412.7 billion (U.S. dollars).
Question: If Canada declared a total boycott of U.S. goods, their economy would lose $63.3 billion a year. How long could this go on before the Canadian economy collapsed?
Moral of the story: Best be careful boycotting goods from a nation with whom you run a large trade surplus. Cutting off you nose to spite your face is recognized as a major error. Cutting off a major source of income to spite Trump is an even bigger error.
