Capt. David Meyer, Chicago Fire Dept., Rest In Peace

“Chicago Fire” is a TV series worth watching. It reminds us of first responders – fire, paramedics, police – who stand watch at night so that we can sleep soundly. And it reminds us of the unofficial motto of the Coast Guard: “You have to go out, you don’t have to come back.”

And after 28 years of exemplary service to the people of Chicago, Captain Meyer didn’t come back. Back to his wife and four children. Back to a large family. Back to colleagues and friends. Back to a city that desperately needs people like him, to counter people who set fires, apparently for no reason.

Question: How old is civilization? Do we trace it back to ancient Egypt, or even before? But that is not my question. I am asking not when it began, but how old is it. And my answer is: one generation. If we raise a generation of race-obsessed ingrates, who make school look like fight club, we will lose not only our republic but our civilization as well.

We just lost Captain David Meyer, CFD. Let us treasure the ones we have left.
