“Born In The USA” – Yes, But So What?

Bruce Springsteen opens European tour by calling Trump presidency ‘treasonous.’

Back where I come from, people said that politics ended at the water’s edge. When we were in a foreign country, we shut up about US internal politics. We especially refrained from making derogatory comments about our president or other national leaders. But no more.

Springsteen has every right to shoot off his mouth, so long as he does not advocate violence. His anti-Trump rants will probably make him more popular in Europe, and with his show-business friends as well. Perhaps the rants will get him invited to more Hollywood cocktail parties and luncheons, if that is his aim.

But even though he was “born in the USA,” I no longer consider him my countryman. His hatred for Trump overcame his love for his homeland. That is tragic, but it is no longer my tragedy.

As Kenny Rogers taught us, “You’ve got to know when to walk away, know when to run.” Right now I’m walking away, fast. I may break into a run. I want nothing to do with bad-mouthers in foreign countries. I consider them back-stabbers.
