O Canada!
Jews make up only 0.9 percent of Canadians but suffer 70 percent of religious hate crimes. If you are excessively happy and need something to pull you down a bit, read this account of the problems of Jews in Canada. Read how many Canadian Jews are coming to the U.S., some returning, some coming for the first time. Not an encouraging story.
Ironically, the article itself demonstrates bigotry. We have anti-American, anti-Canadian, and anti-Muslim. But we have antisemitic, as if semitic does not deserve a capital letter. To emphasize the point, we have zionist, spelled with a lower-case z. When people want to respect Black, they use a capital B. When they want to disrespect semitic or zionist, they use small letters. How obvious can you get?
As is so often the case, when a group feels disrespected here in the U.S., they need to look elsewhere and find things even worse. As President John F. Kennedy said, anyone who expects life to be fair has been seriously misinformed. And then, as if to emphasize his remark, he had his brains blown out all over the street.
No, we can’t expect fairness, at least not in this world. But we can expect people to strike at least a glancing blow at fairness.
