Columbus Day Or Indigenous Peoples Day?

Well, which is it? Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples Day? But why must we choose? Why can’t we honor both the great Italian explorer, and our native Americans? Who says there must be a conflict?

Grandpa Fred and Grandpa Earl did not get along. But they were both grandpas. They both deserve respect. Their anniversaries should be honored.

We are the products of all those who came before us, whether they were honored as deputy sheriff or hanged as a horse thief. Their virtues and their vices went to make up who we are.

Why not observe Columbus Day on October 12 and Indigenous Peoples Day on October 13? Like a marble cake that is part dark and part white, we can enjoy a delicious desert while arguing about which part is better. That is how we keep our freedom: Argue politely while breaking bread together.
