I knew a microbiologist who as a student was assigned to an Army medical lab during the latter part of WW2. He was stationed in India, where we were preparing for the invasion of Japan. We expected 1 million U.S. casualties, and at least 10 million Japanese casualties, mainly civilians starved to death.

My friend was a lifelong liberal Democrat. But he rejoiced with his buddies when news of the nuclear bombs broke. He knew he would be going home soon. He knew he would be going home at all.
