New (Old) Flag At Iranian Embassy In London

Breaking news: Young man, undoubtedly a “student,” tears down the flag of the Islamic Republic, and waves the old Iranian flag with the lion of the shah. Sometimes events that seem small at the time herald important events to come. And we hope they come soon.

In 1979 the shah was deposed, and an oppressive religious regime was installed. Our embassy in Tehran was seized and 66 diplomats and Marines were mistreated. They were held for 444 days.

Legally this was an act of war, but President Carter did little. Finally he okayed an under-equipped, under-manned rescue attempt that, predictably, failed miserably, with 8 US deaths.

Tearing down the Islamic Republic flag, and waving the shah’s flag, not only heralds the rebirth of freedom for the Iranian people. It also signifies the reversal of an American disgrace. As they say, better late then never.
