Residents Of California Apartment Complex Force Out ICE, Police
Woman with Spanish accent berates police for backing up ICE agents and not stopping them. She has no idea that federal law supersedes local ordinances, or that federal officers tell local police what to do, not vice versa.
Of course, if she were back home, she would know not to irritate the Federales. She would know that Federales outranked the Policía Municipal and the Policía Estatal. She would respect the uniform of the Federales as representing her homeland.
But she is not in her homeland. She is in the USA, where she resides, raises her children, and probably holds a job. Most likely she has a driver’s license and is registered to vote, though she is not a citizen, and her visa (if any) may have expired years ago.
No, the USA is not her homeland. It never will be. In the future it may become her children’s homeland, or it may not. Millions of people live here, while their loyalty lies elsewhere.
When my ancestors came here through Ellis Island, they waved small American flags. I do not know what they were carrying, but I do know what they were NOT carrying: Czarist flags of the country from which they were fleeing. They were looking forward to their new home, not looking back fondly at their old one.
But this only shows how old-fashioned and obsolete I am.
