What Is Wrong With Us
Sometimes describing what is wrong requires a long article, perhaps with references and footnotes. But sometimes it requires not even one word, just a picture.
Here we see a street scene in New York City in winter. I believe it is this winter, but it might be last winter – nothing has changed. The overtly communist mayor is doing nothing different from what the previous Democrat mayor did about homelessness. That is, nothing at all. Nada. Rien. Niete. Nichts. Neeshto.
A homeless guy is sitting on a subway grate as a source of heat, though from the way he is huddled, it is an inadequate source of heat. Still, his clothing and boots show that he is more lucky than many homeless persons.
Meanwhile, a woman walks by, totally oblivious to the plight of the freezing guy. After all, there are so many homeless that soon we become inured to their suffering. That’s not her fault. Or is it?
And a young man walks by, actively avoid his eyes. He knows the homeless guy is freezing, but he tries hard not to look. He tells himself he doesn’t want to embarrass the homeless guy. But in reality, he just doesn’t want to see. Seeing might make him feel guilty.
Guilty about things beyond his control – climate change, Gaza, whatever – oh yes, his woke ideology allows him to feel guilty about those remote problems. That kind of faraway guilt requires him to do nothing at all. But guilty about a nearby problem he could actually help with his vote, or even in person? No, just look away and hurry by.
And there we go.
