Bullet Train To Nowhere

Old joke: I was complaining to my friends. They said, “Cheer up, it could be worse.” And sure enough, things got worse.

Want the whole country to resemble California? Not the beaches, the mountains, the lakes, the forests, the rich farmland, the high tech. No, the budget shortfalls despite the productive citizens. The homeless, with human feces and dirty needles on the sidewalks. The pervasive crime and the apathetic non-response to it.

And most of all, the bullet train to nowhere. Originally intended to connect San Francisco with Los Angeles and San Diego, after 18 years now reduced to Bakersfield to Merced, 170 miles for at least $37 billion. Oh, did I say, no tracks laid yet?

You want that brand of stupendous inefficiency nationwide? You want Pennzoil Hair Gavin Newsom as president? Well then, get on the train to nowhere. Someday it might even leave the station. But bring a bag lunch, or you’ll get really hungry. Really hungry.
