What Is The Worst Sin?

Is it murder? Surely that would make sense. But the Bible lists only one sin that God will not forgive. We usually translate it as taking the Lord’s name in vain. But what does this mean? If I repent, I may be forgiven for killing a human being. But I can never be forgiven for yelling “goddammit!” when I hit my thumb with a hammer? Ridiculous.

As Dennis Prager points out, the original Hebrew says, “Carrying the Lord’s name for emptiness.” That is, pretending to act in the Lord’s name while doing evil, which would bring the Lord’s name into disrepute. That would truly be unforgivable.

Examples would include sexual abuse by clergy, but there are others. A clergyman I met stole the congregation’s money, abandoned his wife, and ran off with his secretary. That, I think, would qualify.

But where does this leave Ayatollah Khamenei? He preached that women are inferior beings who may be beaten for not wearing proper headscarves, for dancing, for listening to music, and for refusing sex whenever their husband wanted it.

It is reported that the younger generation in Iran is the most atheistic in their history. They were turned off to all religion by the Ayatollah’s misdeeds. And there you have the reason for the lack of forgiveness.

By his standards, Khamenei did nothing wrong. But the same could be said by Adolf Hitler and Ted Bundy. What about OUR standards, assuming we still have any?

I believe Khamenei was a classic example of taking the Lord’s name in vain. What do you believe?
