Massive Fraud In Hospice Industry

Glenn Beck reports:

“A recent CBS News investigation exposed widespread indicators of fraud in Los Angeles County’s hospice industry, where “over 700 of the roughly 1,800” licensed hospice providers revealed numerous red flags — i.e., shell companies, empty offices, piled-up mail, dead phone lines, and suspicious concentrations of ‘businesses’ in single locations.”

No, it is not a surprise that when billions in government funds are involved, waste and fraud creep in. Or rather, waste and fraud rush in. But the question remains: Why did hospice care become an “industry” in the first place?

Why must the loving care of incurably ill patients grow into an “industry”? Is the infusion of billions of our tax dollars the only reason? Or does our lust for bigness play a role?

Let us use this disgraceful episode to ask ourselves some key questions: Who are we? Why are we here? Does care of the ill and the elderly have to morph into an “industry”? Can human dignity be industrialized and bureaucratized?
