| TBI Linked With Increased Schizophrenia Risk
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) increases subsequent schizophrenia risk by 33%, according to study results published in Psychiatry Research. No one thought that traumatic brain injuries were good for you. But now there is evidence that they are even worse than we suspected. We knew they increased the risk of dementia years later. But now we learn that they may increase the risk of schizophrenia as well. Further research is needed, but we should not delay in taking every reasonable step to reduce the risk of TBIs. Here is a suggestion: Forbid biological males from competing in women’s sports, especially martial arts. Remember the female MMA fighter who was sent to the hospital with multiple facial fractures and a concussion? What a triumph of fairness! Remember the female volleyball player who suffered permanent brain damage when she was hit in the head by a ball spiked by a biological male player. Remember the female Olympic boxer who quit after 46 seconds while fighting a biological male? She received much criticism for quitting, while her opponent went on to get a gold medal. (I did not say earn.) But would we have preferred her to persist to the end of the bout and get a traumatic brain injury? Would that have satisfied our sense of sportsmanship? Injuries, including head injuries, are an unfortunate but necessary part of many sports. But we have a moral obligation to take all reasonable steps to minimize them. You remember that old concept, don’t you? Moral obligations?
