Jan. 6 “seditious conspiracy.” Wait, what? Enter a public building through open doors during daylight hours, unarmed, having heard no declaration of unlawful assembly or command to disperse.
That’s exactly what I did when I went to the court house to contest a traffic ticket, and to the public library to find a reference. Am I also a “seditious conspirator”? If public buildings aren’t open to the public, does the government not have an obligation to post “closed” signs and shut and lock the doors?
Ignorance of the law is no excuse, but ignorance of a crucial fact is an excuse. If the doors are open and police officers actually usher in some people, it can’t be trespassing. And if an unlawful assembly isn’t announced, it can’t be a riot. But it still can be “seditious conspiracy.” Lesson: Don’t get in our way or we will stomp you.
