No, repeated lies, misstatements, and fumbles add to the problem. But what Schlichter says is correct.

When I went out on the ward to see a patient or talk to a family, I put on a clean, pressed white coat bearing my photo ID. I wanted patients and families to know that I took my job, my calling, seriously. Even more important, I wanted to remind myself that I took it seriously.

Do federal agents have to look like Ephrem Zimbalist Jr. in conservative suits and ties? No, they don’t have to. But if they did, they might help to restore trust in the Bureau – an essential job that desperately needs doing. Maybe, if they looked like the FBI, they might start acting like it again.

Shakespeare said we play many roles in life. How about at least making an attempt to play the one we signed up for?
